Eight Fascinating Facts


1 Head

Your baby head may be soft spots (fontanelles)and the skull may be elongated due to the birth journey. Generally baby head looks to be squashy and large.when compared to other body parts.Some babies has hair during birth and some may not have.But all soft spots will come to normal in 6 weeks from your baby birth.Shape of the head changes gradually in 72 hours time.

2 Eyes

Your baby eyes may look in different colour. some may be blue ,green.hazel,mild Yellowish,brown,or mix of two colours. As your baby eyes are exposed to lights,it will change.The original colour of baby eyes can be seen in 15 weeks .If baby has yellow colour eyes for 2-3 days continuously.This is caused due to too much level of bilirubin present in your baby blood.This leads to jaundice. Paediatricians generally take blood test to screen this

3 Skin

Your baby skin wont look like as you expected.Your baby body will be covered with a waxy substance called vernix. In the first week you can see new skins starts to develop ,by peeling this waxy layer.Some babies used to have wrinkled ,some may have dry skin.All these skin spots will come normal in 4-5 days time

4 Skin Colour

Some babies will have blue ,red skin colour when they born.As the time passes they may return to the original skin colour. Some babies skin may be covered with lanugo, a fine, downy hair.Which usually sheds in 1-2 weeks time.

5 Mouth and Tongue

Generally new born mouth and palate will be very soft.The tongue of your baby is examined by paediatricians for free move and sucking reflex.which helps your baby to feed well.Most of the premature baby lack tongue sucking reflex and hence breast feeding cant be initiated. Sometimes paediatricians put a small finger inside baby mouth to check the roof of the mouth (palate) is formed complete without any openings.Baby lacks sucking reflex generally use feeding tube, also known as a gavage tube, is used to give nutrition to infants in hospitals

6 Heart and Lunges

Your baby heart rate will be checked using a stethoscope.The Lungs are investigated carefully for free air entry and exit without any fluid or noise.Most of the newborns have noise breathing in the initial days as it may have slight traces of fluids present in the branches of breathing tract.As day passes it will come normal.A severe conditions called SIDS(Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) occurs in few cases where the fluid level is more and not taken precautions

7 Breast and Genitals

Most of the new born may born with swollen breast and may have few drops of milk traces.All these are due the hormones present in mother body.Girl baby may experience slight vaginal discharge in the first few days.Genitals may be dark in color when they born.They will return to original color in 1-2 weeks time.Penis and vagina of the newborn baby are checked for openings to urinate. Most of the boy babies may have unequal testicle which results in cryptorchidism.A Surgery orchiopexy may be required to cure cryptorchidism in few cases.

8 Hips and Spine

Hips of the newborn are checked for bone dislocation or clicky bones which are examined by paediatricians by spreading newborn baby legs wider.The stability of the hip bones and the straightness of the spine are well checked.Some babies are suffered from Spinabifida which is a birth defect that happens when a baby’s backbone (spinal cord) is not form normally and has nerve damages

Researches suggest the the poor level intake of folic acid supplements by mother during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is the cause for Spinabifida.
